Prep Basketball Roundup: Flat Rock holds off Carlson comeback
GIBRALTAR – Gibraltar Carlson’s boys basketball team might have been caught up in the excitement of opening night.
Flat Rock was ready to play from the opening tip.
The Rams raced out to 12-5 lead in the first quarter and led 27-15 at halftime, then held off a Carlson comeback for a 47-38 win Tuesday night.
“We got down in the first half,” Carlson coach Paul Morrison said. “I think we were really, really nervous. The gym was packed. Once they settled down, they started to play. Unfortunately for us, it took until the end of the third quarter for us to really start playing."
Carlson sliced what had been a 15-point Flat Rock lead to 4 points with about five minutes left in the game.
Graham Junge knocked down four 3-pointers to score 15 points and Joey Godfrey nailed a trio of triples to add 11.
Flat Rock coach Rick Smith praised the defensive work of Timmy Murphy. Corey Lannon grabbed 5 rebounds.
Dejaun Johnson had a big night for Carlson with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Carlson won the junior varsity game 47-43.

The Bulldogs featured a balanced attack as Tyler Dafoe scored 17 points, Brody St. John 12, Bryce Kalb 11, and Brandon Myshock 10.

“Our guys played hard tonight,” Monroe coach Larry Middleton said. “They just ran into a very good Dearborn team.”
Lucis Rzepa hit four 3-pointers and scored 14 points to lead Monroe in its season opener.
Teegan Simmons scored 14 points in a 59-48 junior varsity loss.

Jessica Schrader (14), Grace Caplin (12), and Kennedy Albring (11) all scored in double figures for Ida, while MacKenzie LaRoy rang up 8 points and 11 rebounds.
Abby Haller scored 12 points and Mia Miller 11 for Summerfield (1-1).

“First and foremost, I was really impressed with our defensive effort in the first half,” Flat Rock coach Brian Kryk said.
Addison Kopp (15 points), Madleen Hussein (14 points, 7 assists, 6 rebounds, 5 steals), McKenna Williams (8 points, 10 rebounds), and Breeya Kryk (4 points, 8 rebounds) led the Rams.
