Footballers pay the most for their car insurance at nearly £2,000 a year — almost four times the average car insurance premium in the third quarter of 2019.

Analysis of over seven million car insurance enquiries by price comparison website MoneySuperMarket found that your job title can significantly impact your car insurance premium.

Professional footballers pay the highest premiums of £1,978 a year in car insurance — four times the national average.

However, sportspeople (£1,511) and fast food delivery drivers (£1,291) pay similarly high premiums.

This is followed by scrap dealers (£1,286) and apprentices (£1,243).

At the other end of the scale, invigilators (£252), newspaper delivery drivers (£268), and those who declare themselves retired (£270) have the cheapest car insurance rates.

They are followed by curtain makers (£278) and janitors (£283).

The research showing that footballers have the highest insurance premiums “is to be expected, given they often drive very expensive cars”, Rachel Wait, consumer affairs spokesperson at MoneySuperMarket, said.

“However, it is surprising to see the high rates paid by more ‘everyday’ professions — such as delivery drivers and car wash attendants.

“Insurance companies keep massive amounts of information on the claims they’ve paid in the past, which then influences the way they calculate a premium. As a result, some professions are seen as more of a risk and can be charged more.

“That being said, if you’re in one of these job roles, don’t panic. There are still ways to make savings on your car insurance, such as shopping around at the point of renewal. Doing so can save you up to £250.”
