POST GAME REPORT: Alabama beats Auburn in first ever Iron Bowl with overtime
Alabama and the Auburn Tigers played a tight game in the 86th Iron Bowl today.
The Crimson Tide needed a win today to stay alive for the College Football Playoff, no two-loss team has made it to the CFP yet.
It was a game that ended up in overtime, the first in Iron Bowl history, and regardless of whether or not Tide fans like it, it was one of the best Iron Bowls of all time.
Alabama QB Bryce Young drove his Crimson Tide offense 97 yards down the field to force the overtime period late in the fourth quarter, hitting WR Ja’Corey Brooks on a touchdown pass to tie the game.
On Alabama’s first possession of overtime, the Crimson Tide punched it in via Young’s pass to Slade Bolden in the endzone.
The Tigers would end up answering on their own first OT possession.
After some key defensive stops in Auburn’s first possession of the second OT, Bryce Young, again, got the ball with the game on the line with a score of 20-17. Alabama needed a field goal to stay alive.
Will Reichard would come in and push the game to a third overtime after hitting on a 31-yard field goal.
On the first possession of the third overtime, which is a two-point conversion attempt from the three-yard line, Young hit Metchie in the endzone to take the lead at 22-20.
Auburn answered again with their third overtime possession on a swing pass to John Samuel Shenker.
In the fourth overtime period, Auburn missed on a pass attempt and gave Alabama the chance to win the game once and for all.
Young would not flinch. His pass to John Metchie for the win was perfect.
Alabama finished the game with 388 total yards, including 317 passing and 71 yards rushing.
Quarterback Bryce Young threw for 317 yards and 2 TDs.
Running back Brian Robinson ran the ball 16 times for 71 yards.
Alabama’s leading receiver was John Metchie with 150 yards receiving. The loss to Jameson Williams after a targeting call in the second quarter put the Tide without its best receiver, but they were able to withstand the adversity and pull out the win by a final score of 24-22.
