Portsmouth schools name Steven Krzyzanowski next Robert J. Lister Academy leader

PORTSMOUTH — Replacing the school’s retiring principal, the Portsmouth school district has named the next leader of Robert J. Lister Academy.

Steven Krzyzanowski has been tapped to become the school’s program director, a new title but one which holds the same role and responsibilities as outgoing principal Nancy Roy, who is retiring at the end of June.

Krzyzanowski, named one of three finalists for the position by SAU 52 earlier this month, is the current assistant principal and curriculum director of Sanborn Regional High School in Kingston.

Superintendent Steve Zadravec brought the nomination  to the Portsmouth School Board at its meeting Tuesday night. The nine-member body unanimously approved his appointment along with a numbe of other hires for the 2022-23 academic year.

“He rose to the top of our search through an inclusive process involving students, staff and parents, which included site visits and feedback from stakeholders,” Zadravec wrote in an email following the School Board's approval. “We look forward to his leadership at RJLA.”

Beginning July 1 in his new role, Krzyzanowski will be paid $106,646 for the year, per nomination paperwork presented to the city School Board. The public document shows his salary covers 217 days in the 2022-23 school year.

Krzyzanowski prevailed in the search over finalists Raymond Pillsbury, the Winnacunnet Cooperative School District’s director of special services, and Keonna Geer, the assistant principal of South Portland High School in Maine.

Before his work in Kingston began in 2017, Krzyzanowski was employed in Colorado schools.

Krzyzanowski worked as the assistant principal and dean of students at Academy Charter School in Westminster, Colorado, in addition to serving as a social studies teacher at a different point at a Thornton, Colorado, school.

Created in 1992, Robert J. Lister Academy serves adolescents identified as being at-risk due to behavioral, emotional or learning challenges. The program, typically serving upwards of 30 students, offers a smaller education setting with access to programming and extracurriculars at Portsmouth High School.
