Portion of busy road in Shaler to be closed for weeks for landslide repairs

There are multiple points along Saxonburg Boulevard in Shaler where a landslide caused trees to fall, damaging the guiderail and road shoulder. Repair work got underway Monday morning. According to PennDOT, it’s scheduled to last several weeks.

Numerous drivers were caught off guard by the closure and had to turn around.

“I’m coming on Waze which tells you when roads are closed and things are happening, but there was no warning,” said Tony Bonidy, of Fox Chapel.

He was among the drivers forced to find a new route.

“I’m supposed to pick someone up,” said Bonidy. “I have someone waiting for me on the other end. It’s not so much my inconvenience, it’s almost being rude.”

During the around-the-clock closure, PennDOT said drivers can detour around the mile and a half disruption using Middle Road and Harts Run Road.

Here is the posted detour:

South of Closure

•           From Saxonburg Boulevard, take Middle Road northbound

•           Turn right onto Harts Run Road

•           Follow Harts Run Road back to Saxonburg Boulevard

•           End detour

North of Closure

•           Same detour in the opposite direction
