Man accused of assaulting mailman before hours-long SWAT situation in Brookline
A man is in custody after an hours-long SWAT situation in Pittsburgh’s Brookline neighborhood Saturday evening.
According to police, the suspect assaulted a mail carrier before barricading himself inside his home on Dorchester Avenue.
The mail carrier, who has been on the job for over 25 years, was transported to the hospital for injuries. He is said to be in stable condition. The call for the incident came in at 4:24 p.m.
“Mount Lebanon Police Department received a report of an individual being assaulted with an object, possibly being stabbed with an object,” said Jason Haberman, the acting chief of police. “Upon arrival, officers discovered a mail carrier who had been assaulted with a baseball bat. Upon further investigation, it was found that the individual who was responsible lived a short distance away.”
Police said 43-year-old Matthew Harrison ran to his home, which is a few blocks away. It was then that Mount Lebanon police, along with Pittsburgh police, Baldwin police and postal inspectors, secured the area.
After several hours and several attempts, police were able to get him out of the home.
Harrison is being charged with attempted homicide and aggravated assault. A motive is still not known at this time.
