SOMERSWORTH — A large police presence Sunday night on Main Street and Central Street was the focus of much speculation on social media. What was reported as a possible shooting was essentially a false alarm. The incident involved an airsoft gun and there were no injuries, according to police.

The incident was reported after 7 p.m. near 198 Main St. Multiple agencies and departments responded.

A dozen people from the nearby neighborhood were outside and a shot from an airsoft gun was directed at a car driving by, said Somersworth Police Chief Tim McLin.

That led the driver of the vehicle to get out of the car and an altercation followed, according to McLin. The large response was a result of the incident incorrectly being reported as a shooting, he added.

"The call came in as a popping noise that someone thought was a shooting, but it was not a real gun it was only an airsoft gun," McLin said, adding there is no danger to the public in connection with the incident. "A few of the people have past disputes with each other, so the incident was kind of a continuation of that. We believe they knew the car and who was in it."

McLin said that there were no arrests as a result of the incident.
