Man in custody after police standoff in south St. Cloud comes to an end

A man is in custody after a nearly eight-hour standoff with police in south St. Cloud.

"Crisis negotiators were able to facilitate a peaceful surrender," according to a statement issued by St. Cloud Assistant Police Chief Jeff Oxton.

On Tuesday morning, the Violent Offender Task Force attempted to serve a search warrant at an apartment on the 2700 block of 16th Street South when a man threatened officers who knocked on the door, according to Oxton.

The 37-year-old subject of the warrant, Shawn Lawrence Jacobs, threatened to shoot officers through the closed door of the apartment, police said. Few minutes later, he fired one shot inside the apartment. The bullet went through a wall and into a hallway where officers were.

No officers were hit and no shots were fired by officers, Oxton said.

Police evacuated the apartment building and asked the public to stay away from the area. Oak Grove Road and Goettens Way were closed in the area.

St. Cloud SWAT was on the scene, along with a mobile command post and at least two St. Cloud Police Department armored vehicles. Drones were also used in the area.

Several hours of phone negotiations led to Jacobs surrendering just before 4 p.m. Tuesday. He was taken to Stearns County jail and charges are pending.
