Police officer, suspect die in shooting near Joy Road in Detroit

A Detroit Police officer was fatally shot Wednesday night. The suspect was also shot and killed.
The incident occurred at about 7:40 p.m. near Joy Road and Marlowe Street, the department said.
The officer, who remains unnamed, had been in the department for five years and came from a long line of Detroit police officers, Chief James White said.
"(It's a) tragic event, we lost a hero today," White said in a news conference. "The department and the city is grieving ... this did not have to happen."
UPDATE: Chief White provides an update after an officer and suspect were shot in the area of Joy Road and Marlowe St. Wednesday evening.The officer has died from injuries sustained in the shooting. Our hearts are with his loved ones and the members of our department. The suspect in the shooting has also died. This investigation is ongoing. We will provide further updates when available.

Mayor Mike Duggan said there is too much violence in the city and country, and he wants to do whatever he can to support the officer's family.
"I just spent time with the family, who described our fallen officer as somebody who had a calling for the community and was doing what he loved," Duggan said. "We owe a debt of gratitude to all the officers out there working, and tonight we have an officer and a family with a debt that can never be repaid."

White said the violence in the country right now is "just outrageous. Violence against police officers is just outrageous."
He said it was difficult to notify the officer's family about his death. "This is the worst day of their lives," he said. "Dad's not coming home; a husband is not coming home."
The area has been blocked off, and officers are asking residents to avoid the area as the investigation continues.
