A police officer who died in a car crash on the M6 motorway has been identified as 47-year-old Police Constable Nick Dumphreys.

Cumbria Police released the first picture of PC Dumphreys, who was killed following a collision on the M6 southbound at around 2pm on Sunday.

No other vehicle was involved in the crash.

His devastated colleagues and family have paid tribute to a “kind and loving husband and father” and a “consummate professional” dedicated to policing Cumbria.

His family said: “Nick was a kind and loving husband and father. He was a larger than life character who loved his job and adored his children.

“His passing will leave an enormous hole in all our hearts.”

The officer, who worked for the force's mobile support group, was the sole occupant of the car when he died at the scene, whilst on duty.

Cumbria Constabulary’s Chief Constable Michelle Skeer said: “The sudden death of Police Constable Nick Dumphreys has left everyone within the Constabulary shocked and saddened.

“Nick was an extremely popular and respected officer, not least because of his professionalism, integrity and dedication to policing in Cumbria.

“Colleagues who worked closely with him would describe him as a consummate professional who you could always rely on.”

Cumbria’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Peter McCall, said: “I’m sure the people of Cumbria will join me in expressing out profound sadness at the appalling and tragic loss of Police Constable Nick Dumphreys who died on duty yesterday.

Paul Williams, chair of Cumbria Police Federation, said on Sunday: "All Cumbria Police officers are shocked and saddened to learn about the death of our colleague, who died in a single vehicle road traffic collision earlier today whilst on duty.

"The officer served on Cumbria's Road Policing Unit and his sudden passing has caused deep shock and grief to the policing family in Cumbria and across the UK.

The Central Motorway Police Group tweeted: "I'm sure I speak on behalf of all our followers in sending our thoughts and prayers to the officer's colleagues, family and friends at this tragic time."
