Police investigating human remains uncovered at new Costco site

Redding police are investigating human remains that were discovered about 6 p.m. Friday at the new Costco construction site at Bechelli Lane and South Bonnyview Road.

Native American monitors who are on site to look for Native American artifacts discovered the remains. The remains appeared to be human and the monitors notified Redding police, Sgt. Jon Sheldon said.

“It was obvious human skeletal remains,” Sheldon said.

Police are working with the Shasta County Coroner's Office to collect the remains. The authorities are asking for additional outside resources and specialists to help the investigation.

Officers will remain at the scene through the weekend and into next week, Sheldon said. So far, it's undetermined how old the remains are and whether the site is a crime scene, the sergeant said.

“We don’t know the story and are taking extra precautions to keep the public out,” Sheldon said.
