Driver impaled, trapped after trying to flee traffic stop in Pittsburgh’s Squirrel Hill neighborhood

A man is in critical condition after speeding away from police, driving into oncoming traffic and crashing into a light post and metal fence on the on-ramp to the Parkway East.

Police say the driver was spotted by police after he turned from Bartlett Street into oncoming traffic on Murray Avenue in Squirrel Hill. Police say he didn’t stop and instead, he floored it. Less than a mile away from Bartlett Street, the driver crashed through a massive metal fence on the on-ramp to the Parkway East, twisting the metal into coils and taking out a huge light post. A piece of metal actually went through the driver’s leg. First responders cut off the doors to his jeep to get him out. The man was rushed to the hospital in critical condition where he will be tested for impaired driving.

“My daughter could have gotten hurt,” Cheron Price told Channel 11. “A lot of other people could have gotten hurt. They need to stop and just be careful — you never know who’s around you, children, other people.”

This is the second serious crash in this area in two days. On Saturday, police say Anthony Doria, dove onto a ramp to the Parkway East in the wrong direction, where he hit a car and took off. Troopers say when Doria turned onto Murray Avenue, he drove into oncoming lanes and onto the sidewalk where he hit a pedestrian and a traffic sign.

That’s pretty upsetting,” Melissanne Myers tells Channel 11. “It’s a dangerous intersection. It’s a five-way intersection, where the walkways are too long, and there are a whole bunch of reasons why it’s dangerous.”

State police have a warrant out for Doria’s arrest. He’s facing a list of felony charges for aggravated assault by a vehicle, hit and run and fleeing from police.

“I live at that intersection, and it’s just no surprise,” Myers added. “It’s something that needs dealt with, even for the sake of our youth, who have to be at that bus stop. It’s a dangerous place.”
