Police arrest Brookston man on suspicion of leaving fatal accident

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — West Lafayette police have arrested Trent Robinson on suspicion of leaving the scene of Tuesday night's fatal pedestrian accident on Kalberer Road, police said.

Robinson, 34, of Brookston, is suspected to have been driving the Buick Lucerne that struck Zixuan Mo, a 25-year-old woman who is an international student from China attending Purdue University. She was on a skateboard, trying to cross from the south side to the north side of Kalberer Road about 8:45 p.m. Tuesday.

The Buick struck the woman near the crosswalk to the the trail west of Kent Street, police said.

Mo died from blunt force and suffered injuries — including scrapes, cuts, bruises and broken bones — from her head down to her legs, Tippecanoe County Coroner Carrie Costello said of Thursday's preliminary autopsy results. The final autopsy report is pending toxicology tests.

The car left the scene of the crash, and police on Wednesday asked the public to call them with tips about who might have been driving the car. West Lafayette police thanked the public for their help in locating the car and Robinson.

Brookston Town Marshal Troy Yeoman noticed the car in the 600 block of East Fourth Street and contacted West Lafayette police, who got a search warrant, seized the car and arrested Robinson.

West Lafayette police booked Robinson into the Tippecanoe County Jail on suspicion of failure to remain at the scene of a fatal accident. He remained incarcerated Thursday morning in lieu of bond.

In a news release published Thursday morning, West Lafayette police stated, "The West Lafayette Police Department is grateful for the swift public response that provided helpful information which contributed to a timely resolution of this investigation. WLPD would specifically like to thank the Brookston Town Marshal for his assistance, as well as B.J. Moyars and Sooyeon Shin, from the International Center of West Lafayette, who assisted with foreign language translation and the notification of this tragic incident to victim’s family."
