Plum has new garbage collector; council praises borough couple who helped feed kids during pandemic
Apr. 15—Plum Council has tapped a Belle Vernon-based company as the borough's new garbage collector.
County Hauling was the lowest bidder of three vying for the job.
It will take over for Republic Services. Republic's five-year contract expires in June.
Council unanimously voted to award the $10.7 million five-year contract at its April 12 meeting.
"All the (collection) days are going to stay the same, and we own all the containers so they're going to stay the same," Councilman Paul Dern said. "I don't believe there is going to be an increase (in rates). Their price was pretty comparable to what we had."
The holiday schedule remains the same, meaning garbage will not be collected on Memorial Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Fourth of July and New Year's Day.

Resident recognition
Mayor Harry Schlegel recognized Plum couple Amy and Nick Boccieri at the council meeting for their efforts ensuring borough students were provided lunches every school day in April, May and June of last year for those would could not pick up the meals. The couple received a proclamation.
The mayor said they "exemplify the volunteer and community spirit that helped to build Plum and demonstrated that it is alive and strong today."
Schlegel also acknowledged a four-page letter submitted by an 88-year-old resident identified as "Mrs. Morris."
In that letter, she thanked all her neighbors and other people who volunteered their time and effort to help her.
The mayor said he and other borough staffers are trying to come up with a way to recognize those people besides giving them a proclamation.
The recognitions were part of a program recently launched to increase positivity in the borough and give credit where credit is due.
All proclamation applications are screened. Applications should be filed at least 10 days before a council meeting in order to receive them at that time.
