Playoff roundup: Track and field, softball teams shine at districts

North Kitsap's track and field team found itself in the title hunt Saturday as North Mason High School hosted Day 2 of the West Central District 2A/1A championships.

At the start of the day, the Vikings held a 47-45 advantage over Sequim on the girls' side, while the boys trailed first-place Steilacoom, 68.5-57.5.

On the first day of competition Thursday, North Kitsap's girls 4x200 relay team of Emerson Bollert, Lillian Pruden, Genesi Funston and Jasmine Gipson claimed victory by posting the fastest time in 2A this season: 1 minute, 46.31 seconds. In girls shot put, Olympic's Sara Leasiolagi won with a throw of 36 feet, 11 inches.

On the boys' side, North Kitsap's 4x100 relay team of Lincoln Castillo, Johny Olmsted, Karson Walsh and Logan Sloman took first in 43.76, while Bremerton's Enrique Brambila won the 400 in 50.94.

In the 1A competition, Klahowya's Kelton Gagnon claimed the 1,600 boys title in 4:27.37.

South Kitsap, Central Kitsap and Bainbridge wrapped up competition in the 4A/3A West Central District track and field championships at French Field in Kent on Friday.

South Kitsap's girls placed third in the 4A team race with 77 points, trailing Tahoma (103) and Curtis (93). Savannah Kambich, Marissa Crane, Elise Hopper and Ella Hooper combined to sweep the relay events: 4x100 (49.09), 4x200 (1:42.21) and 4x400 (3:53.94). The latter two times are the best marks in the state this season in any classification.

South Kitsap's Grace Degarimore won the girls discus title with a throw of 126-3.

In 3A, Central Kitsap's girls placed second with 66 points, behind only Curtis (76). Kymeal Gaulden swept the sprint events, winning the 100 in 12.11 and the 200 in 25.35, while Savannah Fourier claimed the high jump title by clearing 5-5. Bainbridge's Ella McRitchie took the pole vault title by clearing 13 feet.

Central Kitsap's boys placed fifth as a team with Blake Reynolds claiming the 800 title in 1:55.78,

Softball teams secure state tournament berths

Klahowya and Olympic clinched state berths Friday in district softball tournament play.

Klahowya (14-4) knocked off Cascade Christian 5-3 in the title game of the West Central District 1A tournament. Riley Carver pitched seven innings to pick up the win and Bailey Watland homered and had two RBI to lead the Eagles' offense.

Olympic (15-4) topped North Kitsap 4-2 in a winner-to-state game in the West Central/Sea-King Bi-District 2A tournament. The contest was tied 2-2 in the seventh inning when the Trojans scored two runs on an RBI hit by Mailli Bode and sacrifice fly by Hailey Feltis.

Olympic had two games scheduled Saturday to determine its top-four district finish.

North Mason (13-8) won a pair of games Friday —15-0 against Tyee and 15-2 against White River — and were scheduled to play North Kitsap (15-5) in a consolation-round game Saturday. After falling to Olympic, North Kitsap stayed alive Friday with a 7-1 win over Franklin Pierce.

Three softball terms were eliminated in district play Friday. South Kitsap (10-11) fell 8-4 against Union; Central Kitsap (6-15) lost 11-9 against Heritage and Kingston (7-11) fell 5-4 against Orting.

Boys soccer teams eliminated at state

West Sound boys soccer teams were shut out in state tournament play this spring.

In the 3A championships, Bainbridge saw its season end Friday with a 3-0 loss to Monroe. The Spartans (17-4) went scoreless in their final three playoff games.

Central Kitsap fell 2-0 to Seattle Prep in a 3A play-in game on Wednesday. The Cougars finished their season with a 14-5-1 record.

Bremerton (13-7) lost 5-0 against Sammamish in the first round of the 2A tournament on Tuesday.
