New player in storage wars is making Med City moves

Jun. 14—A regional self-storage firm is moving into the Med City market in a big way with a 12-building facility.

Fargo-based Five Star Storage recently filed a proposal to build a collection of buildings on 3.9 acres of open land between US 14 and Pendant Lane Northwest. It is proposed to be built near Ninth Street Northwest.

Plans show a two-story, climate-controlled main building surrounded by 11 other buildings with drive-up storage units.

Five Star President Jake Hendricks said building in Rochester makes good sense for the family owned company.

"We've been really focused on secondary and tertiary markets, like Rochester, that show a lot of growth. It's a great market for us. We saw a strong need for it and we found a nice parcel," he said. "We pride ourselves on developing what we consider state of the art, class A products. I think it will be one of the largest facilities in town, but also one of the nicest."

Hendricks said the hope is to start construction yet this year with a goal of opening in early 2022.

Five Star has 32 facilities in North Dakota and Minnesota. This project will be its sixth Minnesota location.

While it will join a growing number of local and national firms vying for storage business in Rochester, Hendricks is confident that it will be competitive.

"We pride ourselves on providing clean, safe and convenient storage," he said."We take care of people, not just their property."
