Championship, Monday, May 23:

NO. 3 ARCHBISHOP WOOD 3, NO. 4 CONWELL-EGAN 2:

Starting pitcher Dakota Fanelli gave up one unearned and drove in two runs with her bat as Archbishop Wood edged Conwell-Egan in the PCL Softball Championship at Neumann University on Monday.

The third-seeded Vikings captured the title for the first time since 2000 after a highly competitive, closely contested game. The outcome was finally decided in the bottom of the seventh inning when Fanelli crushed a line drive to right field that enabled pinch-runner Maya McGrory to race home with the winning run. The inning began with singles from Abby Windish and Maura Yoos, followed by an intentional walk to Parker Kraus to load the bases. Fanelli then stepped up to the plate and put the ball into play which allowed McGrory to fly home and put the Vikings on top.

The fourth-seeded Eagles, in their second consecutive appearance in the title game, took an early lead in the first inning after Katey Brennan crushed a double and later scored on a wild pitch. Both Wood and Conwell-Egan will return to the field for the upcoming District XII playoffs.

No. 3 North Penn 5, No. 1 Pennsbury 2: North Penn junior Julia Shearer not only notched the complete game win, she also hit a solo home run that broke a 1-1 tie in the third inning and then singled and scored in a three-run seventh that all but sealed Pennsbury’s fate in a 5-2 win in Thursday’s District One 6A title game at Spring-Ford High School. Read Mary Jane Souder's story linked below for details on the game.

Shearer determination: Julia Shearer, North Penn win district championship

Semifinals, Tuesday, May 31

No. 1 Pennsbury 2, No. 4 Haverford 0: Ainsley McClure allowed just four hits while striking out 12 in a complete-game outing that sent the Falcons to the District One Class 6A championship game. With the game scoreless into the sixth inning, the Falcons played small ball to manufacture the winning run. No. 3 North Penn 5, No. 2 Spring-Ford 2: Down 2-0 through five innings, the Knights plated five runs in the top of the sixth for the unlikely comeback win in the District One Class 6A semifinal. Second round, Wednesday, May 25:

No. 3 North Penn 3, No. 14 Avon Grove 0: A game with both a no-hitter and a walk-off homerun? It doesn’t get much better than that, as North Penn discovered on Wednesday. But Avon Grove’s pitching was just as stingy, and the game remained scoreless in the seventh inning.
