Plane catches fire following emergency landing, FAA investigates, Calhoun airport officials say

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating a plan that caught fire Saturday after making an emergency landing.

FAA officials said around 1 p.m. Saturday, a single-engine Mooney M20C caught fire at Tom B. David Airport in Calhoun.

Airport officials told Channel 2 Action News the locally owned aircraft suffered an engine failure immediately after takeoff on the airport’s southbound runway.

When the engine began to fail, the two pilots on board lowered the landing gear and landed back on the runway with very little pavement remaining. The plane skidded into the grass and over a barrier on the south end of the runway.

Airport officials said the two people on board escaped when the plane caught fire and burned substantially.

Calhoun fire crews quickly got to work and extinguished the fire.

No injuries were reported from the incident.

The cause is still under investigation.

FAA said they are working on putting together a preliminary report and will release it in the coming day.
