Petersburg man killed when pickup, tractor collide
One person was killed in a crash involving a pickup truck and farm tractor Wednesday evening in Hale County.
John William Stanton, 72 of Petersburg, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash that was reported about 9:19 p.m. Wednesday on FM 54 east of County Road BB in Hale County, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Investigators believe 55-year-old Kelly Gene Smalley of Petersburg was driving a 1990 John Deere Farm Tractor east on FM 54 east of CR BB in the middle of the roadway. Stanton was driving a 2020 GMC Sierra pickup east on FM 54 and approaching the tractor from the rear.
The pickup started to pull to the left to pass the tractor, but the front right portion of the pickup struck the left hay fork on the back of the tractor.
Other factors contributing to the crash were not immediately available as the accident investigation is ongoing.
