Pete Alonso talks about the Derby, dingers and wrestling polar bears on 'Old Baseball Cards'
It’s been quite a year for New York Mets slugger Pete Alonso. He went from being a top prospect to being the Home Run Derby champ and a favorite to win National League Rookie of the Year.
Now, he’s also the latest guest on “Old Baseball Cards,” Yahoo Sports’ baseball-card driven trip down memory lane.
Alonso has already out-homered his age — he has 33 this year as a 24-year-old — which doesn’t even count his mammoth performance in the Home Run Derby. It’s made him one of the best stories of the 2019 MLB season.
On this episode of “Old Baseball Cards,” Alonso talks about one former Mets player he wrote a paper about in his Spanish class, how he’d approaching wrestling a polar bear (that’s his nickname) plus he talks about being super competitive, which comes into play as we try to make a trade.
Alonso picked a pack of 2004 Topps, from when he was 10 years old. I opened a pack of Topps’ 2019 Allen & Ginter cards, which features a mix of current players and legends. And cool news: I’m also in this year’s Allen & Ginter, so we have the potential to find my baseball card.

It all started with a bunch of cards my grandma bought when I was a kid and held onto for years, thinking they’d be worth something one day. They weren’t, so instead we use them as fodder for stories, reactions and memories from baseball people.
