Pensacola may get a Cook Out. Here's the scoop on the North Carolina fast food chain:

North Carolina-based franchise Cook Out is planning to bring its homestyle Southern cooking to Pensacola, with a location lining up to open at 1735 E. Nine Mile Road.

The project was submitted to Escambia County's Development Review Committee earlier this month by Commercial Site Design out of Raleigh, North Carolina.

Commercial Site Design Assistant Project Manager Adrienne Smith said Wednesday that the project has not received approval from Escambia County yet, but is in the review stage. If approved, Commercial Site Design will move on to seek site plan approval, followed by building plan approval.

Smith said there is no projected timeline yet, but a project of that nature typically takes about nine months from start to finish.

As of now, the closest Cook Out to Pensacola is on 116 S. University Blvd. in Mobile, Alabama.

The fast-service, dine-in and drive thru spot has developed a substantial following since opening its first North Carolina store in 1989. Until 2009, all Cook Out locations were exclusive to North Carolina, but the company has since expanded to over 250 locations across the South.

The establishment has labeled itself as having the "best combos in town” due to the ability to assemble your very own Cook Out tray with an entrée, including two sides and a drink.

After seeing the menu, you will want to ensure you come with an appetite, considering some of the "sides" include options like a chicken wrap, corn dog, hushpuppies, slaw and chili.

Trays start at about $5, but the price can be increased in order to upgrade items, like swapping out a sweet tea for a milkshake.

Among the many side options at Cook Out are the white cheddar cheese bites.

The mix and match experience to customize your tray helps provide a fresh experience every time, and Cook Out encourages people to get creative with their choices.

For those looking for something a little lighter, the menu also specializes in chargrilled hamburgers, chicken breast and barbecue sandwiches, along with about 40 unique flavors of milkshakes, like orange push-up, peach cobbler and banana fudge.

The menu nods to some of the North Carolina southern specialties like the signature Cheerwine float or homestyle chicken tenders.
