Pennsylvania State Police trooper from York barracks charged with DUI while on the job

A Pennsylvania State Police trooper assigned to the York barracks has been charged with driving under the influence while on duty, according to a news release.

Joshua M. Ravel was found to be under the influence of alcohol during his assigned shift on Monday, the news release states.

He has been charged with DUI and driving on roadways laned for traffic, the release states.

His blood-alcohol content was 0.144 percent, according to an affidavit of probable cause. The legal limit in Pennsylvania is 0.08 percent.

Ravel, who was on special assignment, traveled from the York station to the Lancaster barracks in a marked patrol vehicle, the affidavit states. His route included Interstate 83 and Route 30.

When Ravel returned to the York station, he was called into a supervisor's office. The sergeant noticed that the trooper appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. Ravel told his colleagues that he had drank a pint of whiskey the night before, but he stopped drinking at midnight, the affidavit states.

Ravel was taken for a chemical breath test, which showed his BAC at 0.144 percent. He was released to an acquaintance.

State police reviewed Ravel's driving through the dashboard camera, and it appeared that he was unable to maintain his lane of travel, the affidavit states. The patrol vehicle appeared to swerve over the fog and center lines on multiple occasions.

Ravel enlisted with the state police in January 2020 and graduated in June 2020 with the 159th Cadet Class, the release states. He has worked out of the York barracks since graduation.

He has been suspended without pay pending the outcome of the case, the release states.

Ravel declined to comment.
