Pemberton Township woman charged over fatal crash

MOUNT HOLLY - A Pemberton Township woman has been charged in connection with a head-on crash that killed a teenager late last year.

Wanda Sprague, 54, was allegedly speeding and driving while impaired during the Dec. 16 accident in Pemberton Township, said the Burlington County Prosecutor's Office.

The victim, 17-year-old Kayla Bowen of Pemberton Township, was pronounced dead at the crash scene near Lakehurst Road and Rancocas Lane.

Bowen was a Pemberton Township High School senior who planned to attend college, according to an obituary.

"She gave so much love, but it was cut short," said the obituary. It noted Bowen, who held a job at Papi's Pizza in Browns Mills, was "very athletic, smart and had a pinch of attitude."

The prosecutor's office alleged Sprague had been drinking alcohol at a Browns Mills bar prior to the 9:15 p.m. accident.

She allegedly was driving without headlights and at more than 90 mph, the prosecutor's office added.

Sprague, a resident of the 200 block of Pemberton-Browns Mills Road, is still recovering from extensive injuries, the prosecutor's office said in a statement.

Superior Court Judge Terrence Cook conducted a hearing for Sprague on Thursday and ordered her to have no contact with Bowen's family, the statement said.

Sprague was charged with reckless manslaughter and vehicular homicide. The charges are only allegations and Sprague has not been convicted in the case.

She also was issued multiple traffic citations, including operating under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
