Pedestrian suffers minor injuries after being hit by Amtrak train in Springfield

One person was taken to the hospital after he was struck by a Amtrak train bound for Chicago at Sixth Street and North Grand Avenue just before 5 p.m. Sunday, according to an Amtrak spokesperson and Springfield police.

The 32-year-old male had non-life-threatening injuries, said SPD Lt. Timothy Jenkins.

Jenkins said the train came to a stop and initiated the call to police.

The individual was trespassing on the tracks when it came into contact with the train in Springfield, said Olivia Irvin, a spokeswoman for Amtrak.

There were no reported injuries to the 285 passengers or crew onboard, Irvin said. The train, which was bound from Kansas City to Chicago, was delayed by little over an hour as a result of the incident.

Jenkins did not give the nature of the person's injury.

Amtrak was working with Springfield police to investigate the incident.

The Sunday following Thanksgiving is traditionally the busiest day of the year for the rail passenger service.

Jenkins said the Springfield Fire Department also responded along with Springfield Park Police and emergency medical services.
