Updated: Driver arrested after fatally hitting pedestrian on Pacific Coast Highway

A pedestrian died Wednesday morning after getting struck by a vehicle on Pacific Coast Highway near Solimar Beach, north of Ventura, with the driver arrested on suspicion of being impaired.

The victim was identified Thursday as Mary Jane Centeno, 68, of Ventura, according to the Ventura County Medical Examiner's Office.

The incident was reported shortly after 9:20 a.m., when a 2003 GMC 3500 dually pickup truck driven by a 61-year-old Oak View man was traveling southbound on the route, the California Highway Patrol reported Friday.

Centeno had been walking on the southbound shoulder at the time, CHP officials said, between Solimar and Emma Wood State Beach, along a roughly 6-mile stretch of the coastal highway sometimes called old PCH.

The driver, for an undetermined reason, allegedly drove onto the shoulder and hit Centeno from behind with the right front of his truck, according to the CHP's Ventura-area office.

Bystanders performed CPR while Ventura County Fire Department units were en route, said fire Capt. Brian McGrath, although Centeno died at the scene.

The driver remained at the scene, McGrath said.

CHP Officer D. Matthews noticed the driver showed signs of impairment, the agency reported Friday. The man was arrested on suspicion of being impaired while driving.

Any witnesses who were not interviewed Wednesday are asked to call Matthews at the CHP's Ventura office at 805-662-2640.
