A pedestrian was hit and killed in Merritt Island early Friday morning during a multi-vehicle crash, highway troopers said.

The crash occurred at about 6:04 a.m. Friday at the intersection of North Courtenay Parkway and Queensland Avenue in Merritt Island, Florida Highway Patrol troopers said.

A 2017 Jeep Limited and a 2018 Chevy Sonic were driving South on North Courtenay when they hit a 36-year-old Cocoa woman, who was crossing the street outside of a crosswalk, troopers said.

The Chevy Sonic hit the woman first, knocking her into the path of the Jeep, troopers said.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Jeep driver, a 37-year-old woman, and the Chevy driver, a 43-year-old man, both of Cocoa, were uninjured.

The southbound lanes of North Courtenay Parkway were temporarily blocked Friday morning following the crash.

FHP did not name the woman, citing Marsy's Law passed in 2018.

Introduced in memory of a young woman murdered by her ex-boyfriend, Marsy’s Law was created to give crime victims a slate of rights, including protecting them and their families from harassment by their attackers.

Some law enforcement officials have interpreted the statute as applying to any victim, as well as to law enforcement officers being entitled to privacy and having their identity protected.
