A 77-year-old woman was killed Monday night by a fleeing car as she crossed a Tucson intersection.

According to Tucson police, Nyabonj Kuajachol Lual died from her injuries at Banner University Medical Center after being struck by a car as she crossed Pima Street northbound.

Officers were dispatched to the area just after 8 p.m., according to police. Lual was found at Catalina Avenue in an unmarked crosswalk. According to witness statements and evidence at the scene, detectives think she was hit by a vehicle traveling eastbound in the curb lane, police said.

"There is no roadway lighting in the area and the pedestrian was wearing dark clothing. Walking in the roadway by the pedestrian is the major contributing factor in the collision; however, leaving the scene of a collision by the driver is the focus of the investigation," a Tuesday evening statement from Tucson police stated.

Detectives believe the suspect vehicle is a white four-door sedan with front-end damage, according to police. Anyone with information was asked to call 88-CRIME  (520-882-7463).

There have been 25 pedestrian fatalities this year in Tucson, police said, adding there were 16 such deaths in 2021.
