PCM hoops open HOIC play with losses to Nevada

Dec. 5—MONROE — The PCM girls' basketball team had a tough shooting night against Nevada on Friday night. And the Cubs' domination in the second quarter led to a 43-35 road win during Heart of Iowa Conference play.

The game was tied at 8-all after one and PCM outscored Nevada 20-18 in the second half, but the visitors had a 17-7 advantage in the second quarter.

"We played a tough Nevada team today and, unfortunately, came up a little short," PCM head girls basketball coach Sami Allison said. "We didn't shoot the ball well and got beat on the glass."

The Mustangs (1-2 overall, 0-1 in HOIC play) shot 24.5 percent from the floor, made only 3-of-26 from 3-point range and buried just 6-of-19 from the free-throw line in the loss. PCM also turned the ball over 17 times.

Tori Lindsay led the hosts with eight points, eight rebounds, five assists and four steals. Paige Steenhoek added five points, six rebounds and three steals.

Addison Steenhoek scored a team-best 14 points, Madie Reed chipped in four points and three steals and Evelyn Burkett and Elle Davis each grabbed three boards. Sophia Steenhoek pulled down two rebounds.

"I give credit to Nevada, they were relentless on the offensive boards and we just couldn't limit their shots," Allison said. "We will learn from this and come back ready to battle against a tough Pella Christian team on Monday."

Nevada (1-2, 0-1) was led by Belle Nelson's 13 points and Emma Strottman scored 10 points.
