PCM girls claim five wins, score runner-up finish at EBF

Apr. 11—EDDYVILLE — A balanced performance for PCM's girls track and field team led to a second-place finish at the EBF Girls Invitational on Thursday.

The Mustangs competed in the Class A division and scored 127 points after winning five events and finishing in the top three in seven others.

Host EBF won the meet with 134 points. The rest of the top five included Albia (68), East Marshall (67.5) and Cardinal (67). Van Buren (59), Pleasantville (57.5) and the EBF JV (2) completed the eight-team field.

The Mustangs won three individual events and were victorious in a pair of relays. The four second-place finishes included two in relays and two in individual events. PCM grabbed a bronze medal in two individual events and one relay.

Leading the way for PCM was Chelsea Bird, who scored a team-best 22.5 points. She won the 200-meter dash in 29.64 seconds and was second in the 100 hurdles with a time of 18.68.

Ryan Bennett scored 18 team points after winning the 100 in 14.23 and placing fourth in the 200 in 30.13.

Celeste Wagaman and Paige Steenhoek also scored double-digit points. Wagaman won the high jump with a leap of 4 feet, 10 inches and Steenhoek was second in the 1,500 with a time of 5 minutes, 42.12 seconds.

Bird and Steenhoek also helped the Mustangs win the 4x800 and shuttle hurdle relays.

Bird anchored the shuttle hurdle relay to a win. Joining Bird was Margo Chipps, Kate McClellen and Belle Hudnut and they finished in 1:12.22, which currently ranks fifth in Class 2A.

The 4x800 team of Steenhoek, Tiffani Koonce, Sophia Steenhoek and Riley DeVore won with a time of 11:12.15.

Bird and Bennett were both part of the runner-up 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams.

Chipps, Bennett, Wagaman and Bird finished the 4x100 in 55.6 and Chipps, Bennett, Wagaman and Taryn Steenhoek completed the 4x200 relay in 2:02.68.

The 4x400 relay team of Delaney Baird, Lilli Baird, Paige Steenhoek and Sophia Steenhoek finished third in 4:43.35.

The Mustangs doubled up in several individual events.

Besides the 1-4 finish in the 200, PCM also went 4-6 in the 400, 2-3 in the 1,500, 1-4 in the high jump and 3-4 in the shot put.

Koonce was third behind Paige Steenhoek in the 1,500 with a time of 5:48.77.

Wilson jumped 4-4 in the high jump to finish fourth and Delaney Baird (1:08.9) and Sophia Steenhoek (1:10.65) were fourth and sixth, respectively, in the 400.

In the shot put, Rylee Gallaher (27-10 1/4) was third and Vi Humpal (27-2 1/2) finished fourth.

DeVore also was sixth in the 800 with a time of 2:49.92.
