Among the immersive trips Johnson has planned: a six-night catamaran journey from Belize to Guatemala’s Rio Dulce that incorporated visits to local homes, galleries, and creative co-ops around Lake Atitlan.
“We work only with small tour operators that are locally owned, such as Belize Hiking Group or Taste Belize,” Johnson says. One time, she arranged a journey led by a guide with a Ph.D in anthropology and food Studies. “The first visit was to a Kekchi Maya village for preparing a traditional lunch, followed by a visit to a cacao farm where chocolate is using a heirloom stone tool that has been passed down from five generations.”
