Pat Shurmur shuts down QB controversy talk after Daniel Jones' first game
New York Giants coach Pat Shurmur is not ready to talk about quarterback controversies just yet. Following Daniel Jones’ promising debut, Shurmur already faced questions about whether Jones would unseat Eli Manning as the team’s starter.
He shut them down pretty definitively, according to CBSSports.com.
"I think, 'Slow your roll,'" Shurmur said. "This is just his first go-round. I think he did a good job. As I mentioned, all along he has done nothing to disappoint us, and certainly when you take the team down the field and score a touchdown, that's a good start. It's something good to build on. We have a lot of time left before we start playing games. Nothing at this point has changed."
Jones only played one drive, but he made it count. He went a perfect 6-for-6, racking up 67 yards and a touchdown in the process. Jones may have been in line to receive more playing time, but a weather delay kept the Giants off the field for a while.
Jones’ main competition, starter Eli Manning, also played in the contest, but barely. He completed his only attempt of the night, picking up 3 yards.
While it was a nice start for Jones, it’s probably too early to talk about a quarterback controversy. As Shurmur went on to explain, Jones made some mistakes that had nothing to do with his throwing. Shurmur mentioned Jones failed to motion a tight end on a play. Those things matter.
Unfortunately for Shurmur, those questions aren’t going to go away. If Shurmur was already asked about a quarterback controversy after one drive, imagine how bad it will get if Jones continues to play well in the preseason, or after Manning turns in his first bad game.
Given that Jones was taken with the sixth overall pick, he’s going to get his shot eventually. Until then, Shurmur should expect to discuss the issue every time he talks to the media.
