Panthers, Steve Wilks wanted to ‘extend courtesy’ with release of Baker Mayfield

There were plenty of factors that led to the failed partnership between Baker Mayfield and the Carolina Panthers. But interim head coach Steve Wilks put it best—it just didn’t work out.
On Monday, the team’s interim head coach took the podium following the release of the fifth-year quarterback. Before taking questions, Wilks praised Mayfield’s professionalism throughout his short stay in Charlotte.
“Baker has been nothing but a professional since he’s been here,” he said. “Complete pro. Tremendous respect for him.”
Mayfield’s release was reported to be a mutual decision between he and the organization. Wilks confirmed that information.
“He felt and we felt we wanted to give him, again, an opportunity to be able to seek whatever him and his agent felt would be the best for them. Again, he has been nothing but a professional for us. So, I wanted to extend that courtesy.”
With Wilks going with Sam Darnold as their starter and PJ Walker as their backup, Mayfield—who led the team to a 1-5 record in his six starts—was unlikely to play another snap for the Panthers here in 2022.
