Palm Bay wins Cape Coast Conference wrestling, Merritt Island second

Palm Bay won the team title and Merritt Island followed at the Cape Coast Conference wrestling championship at Bayside High on Saturday.

Palm Bay's Ronnie Theilacker, the 132-pound champion, was named lightweight outstanding wrestler. He improved to 39-7 with his victory. Mustangs 182-pounder Nick Lesch, who wrestled up with a weight of 168, was the outstanding upper weight wrestler, pinning all four of his opponents and improving to 34-2.

The Pirates accumulated 278 points to Merritt Island's 221. Heritage followed at 190.5 and then Space Coast (131). Satellite, with 104 points, placed fifth.

Logan Delos Santos at 106, Shaver Jackson at 120, 152-pound Nathan Furman, Brycen Turner at 160, Caleo Carrera (195) and heavyweight Carlos Gerardino were the other Palm Bay weight-class champions.

Jeremiah Johnson (126) also won a title for the Mustangs. Gabriel Ferreira won at 138 for the Panthers.

Alex McMiller of Satellite won at 113 and Michael McCarthy at 170. Melbourne's Kendrick Wright won the 145 class, and Rockledge's Howard Craft was the 220-pound winner.

After Friday's first day of matches, Palm Bay, with 11, and Merritt Island, with 10, set themselves up for contention in the team race, followed by Heritage's six semifinalists and Space Coast, with five.

District tournaments begin the week of Feb. 14 as wrestlers work toward individual postseason honors. Class 2A Merritt Island and 1A Palm Bay were both semifinalists in FHSAA dual competition this month.
