Pacific Coast seafood fare headed to downtown Birmingham restaurant

Hazel's in downtown Birmingham, known for its seafood-centric seasonal offerings, is expanding its Pacific Coast-themed menu.

Starting Wednesday, Hazel's new Pacific Coast menu will offer dishes from all along the Pacific, top-to-bottom.Co-owners Beth Hussey and Emmele Herrold, the executive chef, say the menu reflects inspiration from a West Coast road trip.

Previously, Hazel's rotating menu for fall was based on food from the Pacific Northwest.

"The Pacific Northwest menu was always the hardest to do," Herrold said in a news release. "There aren’t as many foods we specifically identify with that region as we do other areas we highlight, like Maine lobster during the summer."

On the new Pacific Coast menu, chef Herrold has added a selection of trendy tinned fish to the raw bar, including Calvisius caviar, smoked sardines, tuna belly and mussels.

Another menu highlight is fresh, Pacific Coast fish available to order every day as a taco or torta.

"It will depend on what's fresh — snapper, halibut, or cod," Hussey said in a news release.

Many previous Pacific Northwest menu options, like Alaskan King Crab and snow crab, will be in the mix as well as spicy mussels and sausage.

Hazel's also added the option of a whole fried fish to the menu and there's a family feast featuring three kinds of Pacific crab — snow crab legs, Alaskan king crab Legs, and Dungeness crab clusters.

You can share a seafood tower offered in three sizes — big, bigger, and biggest — that will offer what's freshest that day. Also on the menu is the hearty cioppino — the classic fish stew with a variety of seafood bathed in a tomato-ey broth. Hazel's popular hot or cold lobster rolls, token burgers, and fried chicken will remain on the menu.

For dessert, Hazel's pastry chef Olivia Rinke is bringing back the Wrecking Ball, described as a sweet and salty ice cream confection that's enough to share.
