Oxford fire results in fatality

Feb. 7—OXFORD — A residential fire at 814 Boozer Drive has resulted in one fatality.

The Oxford Fire Department was called to the scene at 6:19 a.m. Tuesday. Responding units reported heavy smoke and fire consuming half of the structure upon their arrival.

Chief Gary Sparks said OFD personnel entered a window on the opposite end of the structure to search for survivors; however, due to the changing fire conditions, they were forced out of the structure and went on a defensive attack until the fire was under control.

Sparks said there were six occupants inside the home at the time of the fire and the OPD was able to immediately account for five. Personnel re-entered the structure when conditions allowed and found the body of the sixth person.

The name of the victim is not being released at this time pending notification of the next of kin by Calhoun County Coroner Pat Brown.

The fire is currently under investigation by the OPD, Oxford Police Department and the Alabama State Fire Marshal's Office.
