It took mere days after the second season of Netflix's Outer Banks dropped this summer for us to speculate about season three. The good news is, as of 8th December, it's officially happening. Yep, Netflix have confirmed Outer Banks season three! Here's everything we know about the next instalment of the show so far.

What is Outer Banks about?

Outer Banks follows a tight-knit group of friends in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The group of teens engage in a treasure hunt after main character John B enlists his three best friends to hunt for legendary treasure linked to his father's disappearance. The treasure in question happens to be $400 million worth of gold.

When was Outer Banks season 3 confirmed?

Almost five months after series two dropped, on 8th December 2021. Wahoo! The cast and crew took to social media to share the happy news with fans, with Madelyn Cline writing "Remember when y’all said renew Outer Banks."

The official Instagram account added, "✌️+☝️? obx s3. exactly" while Netflix also shared a gallery of the cast giving their best three fingers up to the camera.

Season 2 hit number one on Netflix's 'Top 10' list as soon as it dropped onto the platform on July 30. Speaking to Cosmopolitan UK before the follow up was announced, Chase Stokes, who plays John B revealed, "I would love to keep it going. But obviously it just comes down to people’s reactions to it. Hopefully, just like last year, people really attach to the story and fall in love with the journey of not just The Pogues but the entire world of Outer Banks. All of these characters have something super interesting to offer."

Who will star in Outer Banks season 3?

Thankfully The Pogues make it out of season 2 alive, washed up on an unknown island, so it's very likely that Madelyn Cline (Sarah), Chase Stokes (John B), Madison Bailey (Kiara), Jonathan Daviss (Pope), and Rudy Pankow (J.J.) will all be back in season three.

What might happen in Outer Banks season 3?

*SPOILERS*

The season two finale ends with the Pogues stranded on Poguelandia after losing a fortune for a second time. Jonas Pate, Josh Pate, and Shannon Burke from the behind-the-scenes team told Entertainment Weekly that they're not going to give up on the fortune that easily.

Speaking to EW Josh Pate said "[The treasure] has to become a bigger mystery across the series. And so the treasure hunt is going to expand, and the mythology around the treasure hunt is going to evolve and get deeper. We're pretty fired up about how that mythology is going to expand in season 3. We've been reading a lot of books, and we got some good things to hang it on,"

Other characters might have bigger parts in future seasons

Season two of Outer Banks expanded the story from its original focus on John B and Sarah, which meant that the latest Netflix drop saw Pope getting a larger part in the series. We got to know his family life and learned that he's a descendent of Denmark Tanney – the man whose treasure they've been hunting.

Josh Pate told Decider that the decision to focus on Pope happened early in the writing process for Season 2. He also revealed that the Outer Banks writing team plan to give every character their own major, season-long storyline should the show continue.

We can't wait to delve into the Outer Banks world even more.
