Oppold, DWU men's stay hot with win over Hastings

Dec. 4—MITCHELL — Behind another strong effort from Koln Oppold and a sharp team effort on offense, Dakota Wesleyan's men's basketball team cooled off a previously hot Hastings College squad on Saturday.

DWU shot 56.4% from the field, made 12 3-pointers and outrebounded Hastings by 11 in an 84-68 win at the Corn Palace.

Oppold, who played all 40 minutes, had another splendid game with 30 points, shooting 12-for-16 from the field, making 4-of-5 3-pointers and logging eight rebounds and eight assists. It follows up a 34-point effort on Friday in an overtime win over Doane and a 21-point scoring show in a road win over Dakota State on Wednesday, bringing his three-game week average to 28.3 points and shooting nearly 66%.

Blaze Lubbers added 17 points and 10 rebounds, and Kallan Herman had 13 points, while D'Andre Dennis had 11 points, five rebounds and five assists. DWU led the game 43-35 at halftime.

Hastings (8-2, 2-2 GPAC) had 20 points from Reggie Thomas and 15 from Karson Gansebom. The Broncos were 8-0 before their weekend GPAC trip north and taking losses to Jamestown and DWU.

DWU (5-5, 3-2 GPAC) is off until Saturday, Dec. 10, when they will play at Dordt in Sioux Center, Iowa.
