Opinion: Ovie Oghoufo could be the X-factor for Texas’ defense

The Texas defense was poor last year, but one player could change that in 2022.

Ovie Oghoufo is a name that many are mentioning after the veteran edge rusher represented the team at Big 12 media days. Should he become one of the more improved Texas defenders, we could see the Longhorns defense border on good this season.

Oghoufo was part of Notre Dame’s 2020 College Football Playoff appearance. Though undersized last season, the edge transfer looks to have put on significant muscle size this offseason.

For all the skepticism I have toward last year’s strength and conditioning practices, Torre Becton deserves credit should he transform Oghoufo into the edge player Texas needs.

I recently detailed why I believe Texas might need to run a three-man front to improve. However, if their veteran edge rusher can become the go-to player on the outside, Pete Kwiatkowski’s vision can come to life.

The Longhorns will soon discover how significant an impact Ovie Oghoufo can make on this team.
