New online portal launched for Hawaii foster care licensing
Jul. 24—A new web-based portal has been launched this week to modernize the license process for resource caregivers, who are also known as foster parents, the state Department of Human Services announced today.
DHS said the new Child Welfare Services process will switch from a paper process to one that's "simpler, more efficient, and user-friendly " for applicants. It will also optimize the matching process by identifying the caregivers based on a child's needs.
"The health, well-being and safety of the children and families served are at the heart of everything CWS does, " said Daisy Hartsfield, Social Services Division administrator, in a statement. "CWS wanted to better serve children in care and this new portal will modernize the entire licensing and application process while increasing the numbers of qualified resource caregivers in Hawaii, who can provide stable, safe and loving homes for children and youth in foster care."
After applicants complete the online process and are approved to be licensed, they get matched based on the "best fit for the child, " DHS said. Staff will then assess available homes in the child's community or neighborhood so they can keep ties to their school and community.
The portal will be also be used by community-based partner agencies that assist with CWS in supporting families to enhance the collaboration between the agencies and DHS. The department said it is always looking for qualified people who are interested in becoming caregivers.
