Summer is here, and it's time to jumpstart the seasonal fun with trends that are guaranteed to reinvent your backyard. To do just that, Yelp partnered with HGTV star Jeremiah Brent to let us in on a few ways to make your alfresco space feel like an oasis. “Over this past year, our outdoor spaces have truly become our haven," says Brent in a statement. "With a little bit of intentionality and connections to the right resources, there are so many beautiful ways to transform your backyard into a timeless escape for your family.” From installing an outdoor kitchen to outfitting a deck addition, here's how people are customizing their backyards this summer.

Adding Indoor/Outdoor Space

Outdoor dining has risen in popularity since the onset of the pandemic and doesn’t look like it's dying down anytime soon. When it comes to getting in on the trend, Brent recommends that you consider adding an outdoor kitchen island as it's the perfect way to entertain guest throughout the entirety of the summer. “If you're looking for a bigger change, another great way to upgrade your outdoor dining and entertainment experience is by adding iron and glass doors to blur the boundaries between inside and out," he adds.

Pools and Water Fountains Are on the Rise

Adding an element of water can cool things down as the mercury rises this summer. Brent suggests incorporating an antiqued water fountain to help add an extra bit of tranquility to your yard this season. And supplementing a pool is a no brainer. Yelp reports an overall increase in pool installation searches by 449% since March 2021.

Upgrading Your Deck or Patio

Upgrading an existing patio or deck can be a great way to elevate the overall design and usability of your backyard space. Brent recommends adding a screened porch, which he now uses as a fun play area for his kids.

Making a More Secluded Backyard

Many are finding ways to make their backyards feature a extra layer of privacy. Add hedges, sheds, or even tiny homes to discreet corners of your yard, then enjoy. “One of my favorite ways that we updated our yard in Montauk is through a simple shed that we utilized as a guest house,” Brent explained. “With the help of local contractors, we mimicked the finish and shape of the exterior of our main house, filled in the concrete floors, and created a versatile space to expand our home.”

Adding an Eco-Friendly Element to Your Yard

Sustainability has been at the forefront of many conversations in the last few years. That's why more and more people are finding ways to apply more earth-friendly practices into their everyday life. One solution: Brent recommends adding an herb garden and surrounding it with repurposed and antiqued furniture. Using artificial turf is another way to cut down on your footprint as it requires less water overall, making it easier on the environment and your wallet.
