One person killed in accident on I-70 East, closing highway for six hours

One person was killed Saturday morning after a tractor-trailer struck a stalled vehicle on I-70 East near the Madison County line, according to the Franklin County Sheriff's office.

A black 2004 Nissan truck broke down on the highway, and at approximately 6:26 a.m. the semi truck struck the Nissan, which then struck the driver, who at some point had exited the vehicle.

The driver sustained fatal injuries from the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:40 a.m. Authorities have not released the name of the victim.

The driver of the semi truck was transported to an area hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. A passenger of the Nissan, who had also exited the vehicle after it stalled, was uninjured.

The crash caused I-70 East to be shut down, between State Route 142 and Hilliard-Rome Road, for more than six hours Saturday as crews worked to clear the scene and the sheriff's office investigated crash.

The highway reopened at roughly 1:30 p.m.
