Brace for a chill this morning. A Freeze Warning is in effect until 8 AM in eastern and southeastern MA where the growing season has begun. That means morning 30s across Massachusetts! Full sunshine will only boost temperatures into the 50s with some coastal communities stuck in the 40s. We’ll have a repeat forecast Friday with more below average temperatures.

WEEKEND IN VIEW

Short sleeve return this weekend with highs back in the 60s. Saturday is the “pick” with bright skies and some high clouds moving in from west to east. A weak front will come through Saturday night or Sunday morning with some patchy showers. Although you may see a brief spritz Sunday morning, most of the day will be dry with more clouds around.

We’ll stay warm into next week too. High temps are likely to peak in the 70s both Monday, Tuesday, and possibly beyond.

The Federal Trade Commission voted 3-2 this week to ban noncompete agreements. While the FTC estimates that nearly one in five American workers is subject to a noncompete, these agreements haven’t been a huge issue in Silicon Valley, because they’re not enforceable in California. This has arguably been one of the region’s competitive advantages, as it allows employees to start something new without worrying (in most cases) that they’ll have to spend the next few years battling their old employer in court.

After 6-year hiatus, Stripe to start taking crypto payments, starting with USDC stablecoin
Stripe, the fintech giant, continues to inch its way back into the cryptocurrency market. On Thursday the company announced that it would let customers accept cryptocurrency payments, starting with just one currency in particular, USDC stablecoins, initially only on Solana, Ethereum and Polygon. This will be the first time that Stripe has taken crypto payments since 2018, when it dropped support for Bitcoin due to it being too unstable.

FCC officially votes to reinstate net neutrality
The Federal Communications Commission made its official vote Thursday to reinstate net neutrality, passing an order titled Safeguarding and Securing the Open Internet. This restores, with some changes and protections, the rules passed back in 2015 allowing the FCC to enforce basic rules of connectivity and fairness in broadband. Since the FCC announced in September that it would be pursuing this as a policy goal, it was more or less a fait accompli, since there was no real reason why the Commission, split 3-2 in favor of the Democrats, would vote against it.

The new decentralized social network, originally incubated inside Jack Dorsey-run Twitter, is backing a project that would connect — or "bridge" — Mastodon requests into Bluesky requests so that consumer apps, like Ivory, would be compatible with Bluesky, too.
