One killed, four injured in Sunday morning crash near Bonesteel

Jun. 27—ST. CHARLES, S.D. — One person was killed and four others were injured early Sunday morning in a two-vehicle crash near Bonesteel.

Shortly before 2:45 a.m. Sunday, authorities in Gregory County were called to mile marker 300 of U.S. Highway 18, roughly three miles east of St. Charles or five miles west of Bonesteel, for a report of a two-vehicle crash.

A preliminary investigation by the South Dakota Highway Patrol indicates that two separate Chevrolet Silverados were westbound on U.S. Highway 18, when the 55-year-old female driver of a 2011 pickup made a U-turn and collided with a 2008 pickup.

The driver of the 2011 Chevrolet, who was the lone occupant and was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 42-year-old male driver of the 2008 Chevrolet pickup, who was wearing a seat belt, sustained serious non-life threatening injuries. Charges are pending against him.

The two female passengers of the 2008 Chevrolet were airlifted to a Sioux Falls hospital. A 33-year-old male passenger also suffered minor injuries.

Names of the five people involved are not yet being released pending notification of family members.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash.
