After one-year hiatus, 38 finish at Mitchell triathlon

Jun. 12—The sixth annual Mitchell Area Community Triathlon made its return on Saturday, June 12 at the Mitchell Aquatic Center and Hitchcock Park, with 38 entries completing the sprint triathlon around the east side of the city.

The triathlon was canceled in 2020 due to COVID-19. This year, 57 participants were signed up to take part in the Saturday morning competition.

The top overall finisher was Kevin Mitchell, of Sioux Falls. The 52-year-old had the No. 1 time in the event, finishing in 1 hour, 4 minutes and 38 seconds. Colin Boone, of Sioux Falls, was second in a time of 1:09:59, and 2019 winner Ethan Marquardt, of Huron was third among men in a time of 1:10:13.

Kathy Grady, of Sioux Falls, won the women's triathlon division for the third straight MAC Triathlon. Grady finished in a time of 1:12.13. Sallie Doty, of Pierre, was second in a time of 1:15:47, and Teresa Van Hyfte, of Hartford, finished in 1:16:30 in third place.

Two teams completed the three-person relay format for the triathlon. The Gridline Grinders finished in 1:20:44 as the lone male team to finish the relay, while the Kampmann co-ed team finished in 1:28:29.

The race format included a 500-meter swim, a 14-mile bike ride, and a 5K (3.1-mile) run, which is known as a sprint triathlon, or about half the length of the Olympic format. The swim took place in the Mitchell Aquatic Center pool, with the format changing this year to allow for a wave swim, which cut down on the swimmer traffic in the pool and allowed faster swimmers to have a clearer path.

The bike portion of the race took place on Foster Street, National Guard Road, 413th Avenue/Riverside Road and State Highway 38 back into Mitchell.

The running leg went north of the Aquatic Center to 11th Avenue, north around Northridge Park, south on Capital Avenue and east to Hitchcock Park to the finish line.
