Fatal shooting victim at Village Green Townhomes in Clemson identified

A deadly shooting took place at a housing complex in Clemson early Saturday.

The victim has been identified as Gerard Traver Ouellette, 24, according to Pickens County Coroner Kandy Kelley.

The shooting happened around 1 a.m. Saturday at the Village Green Townhomes at 1108 Tiger Blvd., according to a statement from the Clemson Police Department.

Police received a 911 call about a man who had been shot, the department said.

When police arrived, they found the man lying on the ground with a gunshot wound and he was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the statement.

Kelley said in a statement that Ouellette had lived at Village Green. Ouellette was not a Clemson University student, said university spokesperson Joe Galbraith.

Village Green Townhomes routinely houses students, according to its website, and is advertised as "just a walk, bike ride or bus ride to campus."

Some residents of the complex said they heard gunshots shortly after midnight. Tia Jones, a 27-year-old student at Clemson University, said she became aware of the situation when her dog was agitated by the noise and started barking.

"I heard yelling, and that's usually indicative of drunk college students," she said.

But when police arrived about 20 minutes later, she said it became obvious that something more serious had happened, Jones said.

Clemson police are currently investigating the incident as a homicide. Anyone with information on the case is encouraged to call Lt. Richard Gooch at 864-624-2007.
