One beach in Old Lyme closed, swimming discouraged at another

Aug. 9—OLD LYME — The Hains Park section of Rogers Lake is closed due to high bacteria levels in the water and swimming is discouraged at Hawks Nest Beach, Ledge Light Health District said Monday in its latest beach water results.

Ledge Light had announced last Tuesday a swimming advisory is in effect at Rogers Lake but the health district would re-sample Wednesday, with results available Thursday. The health district said Friday the beach is closed.

A swimming advisory has been in effect for Hawks Nest Beach since last week, and Ledge Light said the area was sampled again Monday; results are expected back Tuesday.

Unlike with Rogers Lake, sometimes re-sampling means advisories can be lifted: the health district noted last week that Green Harbor Beach, L+M Beach and Mitchell College Beach in New London, and Giants Neck Heights (jetty) in East Lyme, were posted with advisories last Tuesday, but results from the Wednesday re-sampling were within acceptable limits.

The agency said rain or other contamination events before sampling can contribute to high bacterial levels.

Ledge Light conducts weekly water sampling Memorial Day through Labor Day at swimming areas in East Lyme, Groton, Ledyard, New London, Old Lyme, Stonington and Waterford.
