Olympics: Rosemount's Payton Otterdahl places 10th in men's shotput

Aug. 5—Payton Otterdahl moved up two slots from his qualifying position, finishing 10th overall in the men's shot put final Thursday morning in Tokyo — Wednesday evening in the states.

The 2014 Rosemount High School grad delivered a throw of 20.32 meters in his first attempt. That was his only successful attempt of his first three. Throwers must be in the top eight to advance to make the final three throws.

The 25-year-old, who's a North Dakota State alum and still resides in Fargo, was making his first Olympics appearance. He reached the final by earning the 12th-and-final spot in the finals with his final throw in the qualifying round.

American thrower Ryan Crouser won gold with a throw of 22.93 meters, defending his 2016 gold medal. Upon claiming victory, Crouser held up a piece of paper that read, "Grandpa, We Did It. 2020 Olympic Champion!" Fellow American Joe Kovacs claimed the silver.
