Nov. 28—OXFORD — Ole Miss sophomore quarterback Luke Altmyer announced on social media Monday he intends to enter the transfer portal.

The Starkville native was in a quarterback battle with USC sophomore transfer Jaxson Dart to replace star Matt Corral. Altmyer played in the first three games of the 2022 season and started against Central Arkansas, completing 6 of 13 passes for 90 yards with two touchdown passes. He also ran for a touchdown in the Rebels' 59-3 win.

Following Ole Miss' win against Tulsa, Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin told reporters that Altmyer was the team's backup quarterback. Because he played in just three games this season, Altmyer is eligible to redshirt.

Altmyer's first extensive action came in the 2022 Sugar Bowl against Baylor when he replaced an injured Corral in the first quarter. He completed 15 of 28 passes for 174 yards, one touchdown and an interception in the game.

Altmyer was part of Kiffin's first full recruiting class and was a four-star prospect from Starkville High School. He threw 79 touchdowns in his prep career.
