OHSAA girls golf: Columbus Academy earns second consecutive Division II state berth

The Columbus Academy girls golf team earned its second consecutive Division II state tournament berth by winning the district title Oct. 3 at Darby Creek.

The Vikings took control early and finished 10 shots ahead of runner-up Columbus School for Girls, 329-339. The team champion and the top individual not on the qualifying team advanced to state Oct. 14 and 15 at Ohio State’s Gray Course.

“I just wanted to make sure everyone stayed calm and played their own game,” Academy coach Maggie Freytag said. “That was really important to us. I figured if we came in here and did what we’ve been doing pretty much all season that we would be OK.”

CSG senior Emma Kim earned the individual state berth and medalist honors with a 75.

“This was the most confident I’ve been,” Kim said. “Not having any preconceived notions in my mind and knowing that each swing I’m going to swing confidently and just do the best I can in the swing and not worry about the result (were keys). ... I knew I played well, but I didn’t realize that it was good enough to qualify (for state).”

CSG sophomore Kristina Ma tied for third (79) after earning last season’s individual berth to state, where she finished third (151).

Senior Grace Luo led Academy with a 79, followed by junior Angela Hu (80), sophomore Caroline Zeiger (83) and seniors Eliza Freytag (87) and Eva Baker (92).

“We’re just very fortunate that every member on the team really cares about their game,” Luo said. “Everyone has been working hard and this was only possible because everyone is so dedicated to the sport.”

Lakewood (353), Newark Catholic (377), Marion Pleasant (385) and Worthington Christian (404) rounded out the six-team field.

Competing in the program’s first state tournament a year ago, Academy finished fourth (694) behind champion Lima Central Catholic (659), which captured its fourth consecutive title.
