It’s official: ’97.1 The Freak’ hits the airwaves with new ‘Hot Talk’ format

There’s a new sports talk radio station in town.

iHeartMedia Dallas on Monday announced the official changeover of 97.1-FM to a re-branded “hot talk” radio format called “The Freak.”

The station will be a “broad based personality radio station that connects in a personal way with the DFW audience,” according to a press release announcing the change.

The station is also bringing Dallas-Fort Worth sports radio legend Mike Rhyner out of retirement to headline an afternoon sports-talk radio show called “The Downbeat.”

Rhyner, who is credited with helping popularize local sports talk radio station 1310 The Ticket, retired from that station in January 2020.

He announced his return to the airwaves in a Sept. 29 Twitter post.

The changeover brings the number of sports talk radio stations in the DFW marketplace to three with 1310 The Ticket, 105.3 The Fan, and now 97.1 The Freak.
